There are lots of little things you can do along the way to keep your body and also your mind feeling great. I try to do a lot of small things for maintenance so hopefully the little things don't eventually pile up into something big. Looking after ourselves with love and conscious intention and being in tune with what our bodies are telling us before we get sick, is one of the best ways to prevent imbalances, illness, and disease. Some of the ways I try to support my body and flush out toxins on a regular basis are:
1. Filtered water and fresh lemon - First thing you consume every day after waking up, have a glass of room temperature, filtered water with half a lemon squeezed into it. This hydrates your body, wakes up your digestive system before you eat so you can digest, break down, and absorb nutrients from your food more easily. The lemon is very cleansing and alkalizing for the body as well. Keeping hydrated throughout the day also flushes out toxins and allows all of our cells and organs to function optimally. Dehydration is one of the biggest factors in so many conditions and illnesses. In general try to drink minimum half your bodyweight (in pounds) in ounces of water per day. For example if you weigh 150 pounds, ideally consume minimum 75oz of water per day (approx 2 Litres). If you currently don't drink enough water, a great way to increase that is to first set the intention and start small, get a water bottle or large mason jar to drink out of and start with a goal of drinking the whole thing each day, once you're doing that work up to drinking it twice a day or more.
2. Tongue Scraping - Our tongue can be a great pathway of elimination for cleansing. Tongue Scraping is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that has been around for thousands of years and can detox our mouths and bodies, remove harmful bacteria, massage and regulate internal organs through energy point connections on the tongue, support the pranic body through which our vital energy and life force flows, and more. Before you eat or drink anything in the morning, after you wake up, scrape your tongue 5-10 times from back to front with a tongue scraper, and again before bed at the end of the day. (Tongue Scrapers are available at most health food stores, or locally in Pemberton at Stay Wild Natural Health).
3. Eat Something Green - Green foods are packed full of vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and are generally very alkalizing and cleansing for the body. Whether it is leafy greens in salads, micro greens or sprouts, spinach or kale in your smoothie, or a blue-green algae powder like Spirulina, E3 Live, or Chlorella mixed in with your water, juice, or smoothie; trying to make a point to include at least one of these type of greens in your diet every day is excellent for general health of your body and mind.
4. Dry Brushing - This is brushing the skin with a natural bristle brush or loofah, while your skin is dry usually in the morning right before showering. You start at the hands and feet and brush towards the heart in long, smooth, soft strokes, usually brushing each section of skin 5-10 times. For the abdomen, back and under arms brush in a circular clockwise motion. It is very exfoliating and makes your skin feel soft and look great, it is also excellent lymphatic drainage, great for circulation, and can boost energy. Our skin is the largest pathway of detoxification in the body.
Be nice to yourself! Take the time for self care and self love. Regularly taking time, even if it's only a few minutes to consciously look after yourself also allows you to show up at your best for everyone and everything else in your life too.
